The shackles chafed your wrists as the slaver's whip cracked overhead, urging the line of captives onward through the winding alleys of Ur. You stumbled in the sand, limbs aching from the long march across the desert into the city. The air was thick with the smells of spice and incense, strange tongues assaulting your ears on all sides. Yet wonder pierced the fog of despair that clouded your thoughts. Ur was a sight to behold, its massive walls and towering ziggurats scraping the sky. The Moon Temple dominated the city, a gleaming monument of alabaster and gold. Everywhere was the bustle of commerce, the cries of traders hawking exotic wares. The slaver's lash snapped again, drawing blood. "Keep moving, wretch!" You bowed your head and shambled onward, the splendors of Ur fading behind mudbrick walls. A wooden gate creaked open to admit you into a cramped courtyard, thronged with hollow-eyed souls in chains. The slaver barked an order and his guards began separating captives into lots, bartering with merchants seeking new stock for households and brothels. A plump man with a serpent's smile examined you, prodding your limbs. "A fine specimen," he purred. "You shall make an excellent cupbearer. Do not disappoint me." His gaze promised pain if you did. The slaver pocketed his silver with a grunt.
